West Michigan Roundup, Friday 3/5/21

Last night featured several great games across the area. The headlines include West Ottawa beating Grand Haven, FHN dismantling FHC by 20 points, and Benton Harbor dropping the rematch against Williamston. Down in Southwest MI, Centreville survived a scare from White Pigeon 61-57. Comstock played Brandywine much tougher than most would have expected, only losing 58-47. Northview got back in the win column over Lowell following three straight losses. Lastly, Grandville played OK Red frontrunner Rockford extremely tough falling 55-52.

Best Win: West Ottawa over Grand Haven 57-46

Another win for the Panthers which is their third straight as they move into 2nd place in the OK Red. Grand Haven started the season hot but have now dropped three of their past five games. My pre-season prediction of Rockford #1 and West Ottawa #2 is now coming to fruition.

Next Best: FH Northern over FH Central 62-42

After their loss to Williamston many people dropped FHN in the rankings, but the Huskies have not lost since. In fact the closest they have come to losing is a 16 point victory over Northview. My preseason #1, FHN is such a talented team that nobody is going to want to see come tournament time.

Game I Attended: Parchment 40, Hackett Catholic 26

In this SAC-Valley battle, both Parchment and Hackett Catholic came into the game at (5-3). Parchment jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead while Hackett struggled to make shots starting 1-7 from the field. After the first quarter Hackett was 2-13 from the field with only 6 points while Parchment led 10-6. Parchment’s Andre Whiteside continued his dominance on the boards with 6 more points in the second quarter leading his team with 11 points at halftime. Hackett did pick up the pace on offense but still trailed 25-16 at halftime. The third quarter was a disaster on offense for Hackett Catholic only scoring 3 points going 0-14 from the field. Parchment extended their lead to 17 points leading 36-19 after three quarters. Parchment held the ball for extended periods of time in the fourth quarter draining the clock before taking out their seniors to acknowledge them on senior night. The final score ended up being 40-26 Parchment as the Panthers improved to 6-3. Leading Parchment was Andre Whiteside, a talented big man with 15 points. Other scorers included Aaron Jasiak with 8, Evan Jasiak with 7, and Zach Dean with 6. Hackett Catholic was led by Tommy Keyte with 8 points.
