West Michigan Roundup, District Finals

Best Win: Bronson over Centreville 66-58

Bronson entered district play on fire, winning their final six games of the season after starting (5-9). The Vikings hosted (18-3) Centreville for the district final looking to pull off the mild upset. Bronson came away with an eight-point victory led by 19 points from Aden Hathaway. Centreville’s senior combo of Tyler Swanwick and Mason Lemings combined for 37 points with 19 pts and 18 pts respectively. I knew that Bronson would give Centreville a much closer game than people would expect, but I was not sure that they would upset the Bulldogs. Bronson moves on to face Watervliet in the regional-semifinals.

Next Best: GR Christian over South Christian 44-42

GR Christian defeats South Christian for the second time this season. The loss snaps South Christian’s eight game winning streak and ends the Sailors season. Delon McCloud led GRC with 12 points while Jasiah Rainey added 11 points. South Christian was led by freshman Carson Vis with 14 points. I had picked South Christian to come away with this district title, but the young Sailors came up just short. Look for them to be a dangerous team next season. GR Christian will rematch with Catholic Central in regional play.

Starting Five (Notable Games):

1. Northview 71, Rockford 48

The atmosphere for this district final game was off the charts, a capacity crowd on hand with some people forced to stand in the doorway to catch the action. Rockford entered the game (19-2) while Northview was (21-1). Kyler Vanderjagt put on a Mr. Basketball-esque performance with 29 points leading the Wildcats. Calvin Hyde dominated in the post early in the game scoring 13 points while sophomore guard EJ Ryans added 12 points. Northview moves on to regionals where they will face Muskegon.

2. West Ottawa 38, Grandville 32

The (11-12) Panthers of West Ottawa are district champions once again. West Ottawa overcame a 25-20 deficit entering the final quarter to claim the district title. Although the Panthers struggled in the regular season, I had this team winning the district with their senior leadership and veteran coaching. West Ottawa will face Wyoming in the regional-semifinals.

3. St. Joseph 52, Lakeshore 49

The third meeting of the season between rivals St. Joseph and Lakeshore took place in the district final. Lakeshore trailed 48-47 with :05 left when Jack Carlisle stole the inbounds pass and made a layup to take the lead at 49-48. Following that play, Lakeshore was called for a blocking foul in the backcourt which sent St. Joseph to the line. St. Joe converted both free throws to take a one-point lead at 50-49. The Lancers would miss and foul St. Joe again and the Bears would take the district title.

4. Catholic Central 68, Unity Christian 48

The Crusaders of Unity Christian matched up with Catholic Central for a district title rematch from last season where Unity lost by 19 points. Unity Christian entered the game a perfect (21-0) while Catholic Central was (20-1). Catholic Central defeated Unity Christian by a large margin once again in the district final. Kaden Brown led the Cougars with 26 points while Jack Karasinski added 14 points, and Durral Brooks had 13 points. The Crusader's senior star Gabe Newhof finished his final high school game with 16 points and 8 rebounds. Catholic Central will face GR Christian in the regional semi-finals.

5. Parchment 58, Otsego 55

The Parchment Panther's incredible season continues with a three-point victory over Otsego. Parchment improves to (21-1) on the season and will face Edwardsburg in the regional semi-finals. The stellar career of Otsego guard Ashton Atwater has come to a close as he finished with 30 points in his final high school game.
