King and Central advance on Saturday to PSL Championships
It wasn't the bright lights of Ford Field like in years past, but you know when #1 Cass Tech and #2 King meet its going to bring out something different from everyone.
For King it brought out of the best in playmaking abilities of their Iowa State commit, 2018 WR/CB Jaeveyon Morton. Morton opened the game with a kickoff return for a touchdown. Morton had nice offensive plays and plays on defense as well as a forced fumble on King's own 1 yard line that the Crusaders recovered to halt Cass Tech's comeback plans.
Detroit King 2019 QB Dequan Finn scored the lone offensive touchdown just 90 seconds into the game following a Cass Tech fumble. Finn had several nice runs including two long distance runs called back from holding penalties and he had several very impressive throws.
King recovered 5 Cass Tech turnovers and tackled their Punter, not allowing a punt off. Jaeveyon Morton had an impressive tackle on the ball, prying it loose to stop a potential touchdown which would have made the score 13 or 14 to 17 with 4 minutes left. 2019 S Marvin Grant is a vicious and reliable S/OLB prospect who had an interception and numerous big tackles. Detroit King 2018 OLB Maurice Brown caught what would have been an arguable incomplete pass or fumble, but he made it a no doubter as he intercepted EMU commit Aaron Jackson who was injured and unfortunately left on an ambulance following the play. Western Michigan commit 2018 DE Maurice White was also unblockable for a majority of the game.
Cass Tech 2018 CB Kalon Gervin provided a huge boost for the Technicians before halftime with a pick-six from about 40 yards out. Gervin burst down the sideline and was knocked down but Gervin used 1 hand to keep himself up and lunged towards the endzone with 3 seconds before halftime.
Other notes: 2019 S/QB Jalen Graham had an impressive first half at Safety but moved to QB to replace Aaron Jackson. Graham quietly led Country Day to an improbable run to the D4 finals in 2016 where they lost to GRCC. Graham showed a lot as he has elite speed and burst. 2019 RB/ATH Jaren Mangham had several nice carries for the Technicians as he can run around or through defenders.
In the other PSL semi-final game, Detroit Central outlasted Mumford 40-25 in a back and forth affair. The first half was ugly for Central with double-digit flags and an ejection. Western Michigan commit, 2018 El-Julian "Juju" Jordan took over following the ejection as he hit his receiver Germaine Williams on a perfect Slant for a 60+ yard gain. From there it was the Juju Show as he constantly found receivers open and had 2 QB sneak touchdowns. 2018 WR/ATH Jerrod Vines is one of the most underrated players in the state, he had a big game at WR/CB but had some nice runs as a RB as well.2018 RB/LB "ATH" Brandon Cooper had a tremendous day with numerous nice tackles and a touchdown through the ground and the air. 2018 RB Chaim Austin had impressive touchdown run where he ran through 2 defenders. 2018 DT Desmond Walker had a game-sealing interception as the DT dove for an interception. 2018 Slot DJ Adkins provided a few huge plays and capped off the scoring for Central.
For Mumford Devon Lucas had several nice plays on all three phases of the game. 2018 OLB/WR Brandon Green also had a huge day of both sides of the ball.
