Edwardsburg captures first ever State Championship defeating Chelsea 28 to 7
The Edwardsburg Eddies won their first ever State Championship in school history in boy’s sports. The only other championship was in volleyball in 1979.
First Half
Turnovers and missed chances were the story of the first half. Chelsea threw two interceptions in Edwardsburg territory and missed a 23 yard field goal before the half.
The Eddies had a turnover on downs deep in Chelsea territory. Both teams had chances to score but were not able to capitalize on those chances.
The Eddies struck on their second drive of the game with a five yard touchdown run by Caden Goggins and a two point conversion to put them up 8 to 0.
Chelsea answered back with a touchdown pass from Quinn Starkey to Hunter Neff from four yards out to make it an 8 to 7 Eddies lead.
“We had a hard time getting anything going offensively in the first half” Head coach Kevin Bartz said.
Second Half
The story of the second half was time of possession. On the first two possessions the Eddies took almost a whole quarter to score and turn the ball over on downs.
Edwardsburg came out strong to start the second half. They had a 12 play 83 yard drive capped off by a five yard touchdown run by Mac Gaideski and a two point conversion to make it a 16 to 7 lead.
Chelsea would drive deep into the Eddies territory but were unable to put points up turning the ball over on downs.
“The defense made big plays, we got turnovers when we needed to. They really stepped up for us tonight” Bartz said.
Both teams only had one possession in the third quarter.
The Eddies continued to dominate the line of scrimmage on their second drive but it came up short. The drive stalled out in the red zone with a turnover on downs.
Chelsea would get the ball and turn it back over on downs. The Eddies would take advantage of the field position with a touchdown by Tre Harvey from five yards out to make it 22 to 7.
“We started figuring out what they were doing in the second half and just started to execute and play Edwardsburg football” Bartz said.
Edwardsburg would add another touchdown late with a 53 yard run by Goggins to make it a 28 to 7 lead.
The Eddies would finish the night with 382 rush yards and have two 100 yard rushers on the night. Goggins would finish with 125 yards and two touchdowns. Chase Sager would also add 119 yards for the Eddies.
