Anchor Bay & L'Anse Creuse North Players discuss the importance of Rivalry
On the Northeast corner of Metro-Detroit sits L'Anse Creuse North High School in Macomb County and Anchor Bay despite being in St. Clair County is also a Division 1 enrolled high school, down the road. The result of the bordering communities creates the perfect rivalry for high school sports.
This just isn't any win or loss for the two programs as a traveling trophy, The Anchor Trophy is awarded to the winning team. L'Anse Creuse North has won the previous 5 meetings vs. Anchor Bay.
The old line of "wins don't matter for this game" is certainly true as LCN is 0-2 and Anchor Bay is 2-0. When the ball kicks off and the final horn blows, no one will be paying attention to records.
The following players on each schools commented on the meaning of the game and trophy:
L'Anse Creuse North 2018 LB/S Myles McHaney - "Playing Anchor bay each year you must go into the game expecting war! Nothing will be given in this game you must earn every set of downs.. Everyone will be playing with high intensity and the will to win. This year is especially deep because the recent passing of our teacher Mrs. Kozian. She loved the game and the rivalry, she's watching from above now. Becoming a senior this year is my last time participating in this rivalry and I'm looking forward to this last ride. My team is going to put everything we have into this game in hopes we can get the job done and keep the Anchor at our school for another year."
L'Anse Creuse North 2018 QB Blake Daniels - "The Anchor Bay game is a great rivalry. Every year everyone looks forward to this game between our two schools. It's a feeling you can't describe unless you're playing in the game. Also since this is my senior year it adds another aspect to the game, because this is your last time suiting up and playing your rival and you want it to be the best of the four you get to play. Go North, the Anchor is coming back home for the 6th time in a row!"
L'Anse Creuse North 2019 LB/RB Jake Tocco - "There's no feeling that compares to Anchor Bay week. You have the whole school and community looking forward to it and talking about it all week, and the last thing any of us ever want to do is let them down. It is a VERY personal game for us all because of the stuff they have done to us and our school. The feeling that builds up inside of me for this game is 1 of a kind."
Anchor Bay 2018 QB Troy Bondar - "I think it's going to be a great game. It's good to have a chance to bring the Anchor back to The Bay. As a senior I, along with my fellow classmates, would love to take advantage of our last chance at doing this. We've been working harder than ever and we're ready for this game."
Anchor Bay 2019 RB/DB Mike Harper - "I've never been so hyped up for a game. I think this is Anchor Bay's year for football. Our team has come together as a family this year and we've been waiting for this year since we've all been playing together when we were 7. Although LCN has gotten us the last couple of years they have no idea what they're in for."
Anchor Bay 2019 LB Zack Bluemer - "The LCN game is the game of the year. For me personally I would rather win that game then any other game of the year. Every year this game could go either way but this year I really have a good feeling that we will be bringing home that trophy where it belongs and it will stay with us for many years to come."
Anchor Bay 2019 DT/OG Mike Biecker - "It's the biggest game of the year for us, the game is always well played and hopefully we come out on top."
